5 Best 2-Day Getaways Near Kathmandu

Got a weekend and a need to escape the city? Five overnight getaways within a few hours of Kathmandu — ridge sunrises, Newari old towns, hilltop monasteries and one easy hike-in.

Kathmandu is intense, and the cure is usually about two hours away. You don't need to commit to a full trek to reset — a single night on a quiet ridge, in an old Newari town, or at a hilltop monastery does the job. Here are five overnight escapes that are easy to organise and hard to regret.

The valley rim is high enough that almost all of these come with a Himalayan sunrise. Stay the night, set an early alarm, and you'll see the mountains that the city's haze usually hides.

1. Nagarkot — the easy sunrise classic

  • Distance: ~28 km, 1.5 hr drive · Best for: a low-effort mountain sunrise

The default Kathmandu getaway for good reason: a ridge of hotels at ~2,100 m with an enormous Himalayan panorama — Langtang, Ganesh, and on the clearest days a glimpse of Everest. Drive up in the afternoon, watch sunset, sleep, catch the dawn, then walk down to Changunarayan temple before heading back. Almost no effort, maximum view.

2. Dhulikhel & Namobuddha — old town and monastery

  • Distance: ~30 km, 1.5 hr drive · Best for: culture + a gentle ridge walk

Base in Dhulikhel's medieval Newari old town, with its own fine mountain view, then spend day two walking the ~9 km ridge to Namobuddha — one of Nepal's holiest Buddhist sites, where you can even stay at the monastery guesthouse. The best mix of comfort, culture and a little walking.

3. Chisapani–Nagarkot — the hike-in weekend

  • Distance: trailhead ~40 min drive · Best for: an actual trek in two days

The most active option: drive to Sundarijal, hike up through Shivapuri National Park to the ridge village of Chisapani (~2,300 m) for the night, then walk the forest ridge on to Nagarkot the next day. A real taste of teahouse trekking, no flight or permit required. If you like this, you're ready for Helambu or Langtang.

4. Bandipur — the hilltop time capsule

  • Distance: ~145 km, 4–5 hr drive · Best for: a slower, prettier escape

Further out, on the road toward Pokhara, but worth the drive: a preserved Newari trading town strung along a car-free ridge, with cobbled streets, heritage inns and a clean Himalayan view. The most atmospheric overnight on this list — and an easy stop if you're heading west anyway.

5. Shivapuri / Kakani overnight — nature on the doorstep

  • Distance: ~30–40 min drive · Best for: forest and quiet, closest to the city

For the shortest possible escape, head into the Shivapuri hills on the north rim or out to the meadows of Kakani — a resort or homestay night surrounded by forest and birdsong, with Ganesh and Langtang on the horizon. Barely an hour out, and a different world.

Weekend planning notes

  • Go for the sunrise. The whole point of staying over is the dawn view — book a room facing north and ask about the mountain aspect.
  • October–March is clearest; monsoon weekends are green and atmospheric but often clouded over.
  • Book ahead on Nepali weekends (Friday–Saturday) and around festivals, when Kathmandu residents have the same idea.

Caught the bug for more than a night out? These getaways are the gateway drug — when a weekend isn't enough, the full trek catalogue is the next step.
