Best Autumn Treks in Nepal (Sep–Nov): The Peak-Season Picks

Autumn is the cleanest air and most stable weather of the year in the Nepal Himalaya — and every classic is open. The treks to prioritise from September to November, and why to book early.

If you only trek in Nepal once, do it in autumn. The monsoon has just washed the haze out of the sky, the air is stable, the days are crisp, and the rhododendron-green hills have dried to gold. From late September through November every classic trail is open and at its best.

Autumn is the photograph you've seen of Nepal — that absurdly clear, deep-blue sky behind a white wall of 8,000-metre peaks. It's also the busiest season, so the planning question isn't "which trek is good" (they all are) but "how do I get ahead of the crowds."

The peak-season classics

Everest Base Camp

  • Duration: 11–17 days · Max altitude: 5,545 m (Kala Patthar)
  • Autumn note: the iconic season; book lodges and Lukla flights well ahead

The big one, and autumn is when the Khumbu is at its clearest. Expect company on the trail and full teahouses at Gorakshep — go in late November for thinner crowds and still-stable weather. See the EBC trek →

Annapurna Base Camp

  • Duration: 7–12 days · Max altitude: 4,130 m
  • Autumn note: shorter, lower, and reliable — a great first Himalayan trek

Into the Annapurna Sanctuary amphitheatre with no single big pass, which makes it forgiving for first-timers while still delivering a 360° wall of peaks at sunrise. See the ABC trek →

Annapurna Circuit

  • Duration: 9–15 days · Max altitude: 5,416 m (Thorong La)
  • Autumn note: the Thorong La pass is most reliably open and snow-free now

The classic teahouse circuit — diverse landscapes from rice terraces to high desert, capped by the Thorong La. Autumn gives you the best odds of a clear, safe pass day. See the Annapurna Circuit →

Manaslu Circuit

  • Duration: 9–18 days · Max altitude: 5,160 m (Larkya La)
  • Autumn note: Sep–Nov is the prime window; restricted area, guide + 2 required

The quieter alternative to the Annapurna Circuit, circling the world's eighth-highest peak. Wilder, more committing, and at its best in clear autumn light. See the Manaslu Circuit →

Gokyo Lakes

  • Duration: 10–14 days · Max altitude: 5,357 m (Gokyo Ri)
  • Autumn note: turquoise lakes at their most vivid against clear skies

The Everest region's quieter side — a string of glacial lakes and the Gokyo Ri viewpoint that arguably beats Kala Patthar. Combine with EBC over the Cho La if you've got the days. See the Gokyo Lakes trek →

Everest Three Passes

  • Duration: 18–22 days · Max altitude: 5,535 m
  • Autumn note: the three high passes need the stable weather autumn provides

The complete Khumbu loop — Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La — for strong, acclimatised trekkers. The passes demand good conditions, which is exactly what autumn delivers. See the Three Passes trek →

Kanchenjunga Circuit

  • Duration: 20–28 days · Max altitude: 5,143 m
  • Autumn note: remote far-east; clear autumn skies make the long approach worth it

A three-to-four week expedition to both base camps of the world's third-highest mountain, through some of the least-visited country in Nepal. For those with time and trekking experience. See the Kanchenjunga Circuit →

Beat the autumn crowds

  • Book Lukla flights and key lodges early for any Everest-region trek — October fills months ahead.
  • Aim for the shoulders. Mid-September (just after monsoon) and late November are quieter than the early-to-mid October peak, with weather almost as good.
  • Go restricted. Manaslu, Tsum and Nar Phu are gorgeous in autumn and a fraction as busy as the Annapurna/Everest highways.
